My classroom has been working on “Menu Math” throughout the school year in which students locate specific items on a menu and then add the cost of the items to determine the total cost. With this in mind, I wanted the students to make a real-world connection by transferring the newly acquired skill to a real-world setting by taking the students to Harvey’s restaurant in Riverside. While at Harvey’s, students got the experience of independently ordering menu items, adding up their own bill to find the total cost, and use the appropriate amount of money to pay for their meal. One of my students even got the opportunity to ring up customer tickets on a real register, use the credit card machine, and give change. A special thank-you to Harvey's restaurant for helping make this a fun and memorable experience for my classroom!
